How to store photos.
My dear wife found herself in an unusual situation recently. She had run out of space on her hard drive on her Mac. A quick check by Techo Son told Mum that she had, well, erm, quite a large number of photos on her computer. And I mean a large number. Not 100s, not 1000s, but, erm, well, do I need to go on? The problem was bad enough, that when she went to MacLand – I mean the Apple Store – in our local mall and bought a new Mac, the salesperson sold her one that didn’t have enough space to store all her pictures! Most of all it was too small to then store any documents or music…. [To Apple’s credit they fixed it up the very next day – with a good financial deal to upgrade – and in addition she found she had been served by an inexperienced salesperson who had some ‘raised eyebrows’ sent their way by a supervisor when she returned ]
The flip side of this was an old hard-cover album I recently looked through of when my wife and I first moved to Australia. That was in 1990 before the so-called Digital Revolution. The album contained a few dozen (maybe even a couple of hundred) photos. These spanned the most dynamic six month period of our lives, up to that point. We went here, there and everywhere each and every weekend. I took a lot of pictures by most people’s standards even then. You know, 36 to a roll and all that. The album – even though a very large page format album with around two inches thickness of pages – was still only around half full.
So what does this mean? Do we just take photos these days and not look at them anymore? Or do we ever review what we have taken to filter out the good from the bad, and then hit delete, to leave just the worthwhile images? Do we all look at life just through a phone? That’s without actually looking at – and therefore actually immersing ourselves in – life? Does anyone have any photo albums anymore? Or any pictures printed and framed and put on a wall?
To the clincher!!!
In conclusion, I don’t really have any answers here on how to store photos. But just keeping all your digital-only photos on the hard drive on a computer (or even worse just on your phone) is bad. It’s very much like the way you used to keep all your home movies on VHS tapes. What happened to them???
I can hear your mind going over as I type…
